ExCELS PROGRAM
Experiencing the Community through Educational Learning Skills (ExCELS) is The Arc LAOC’s exceptional, age-appropriate program assisting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as they develop basic daily living skills, personal independence, and self-determination, with a focus on successful integration into the community. Social, vocational, educational, and physical needs are met by Arc LAOC staff to achieve outcomes including:
- Determining and accomplishing personal goals or objectives such as basic skill development in work, play, living, education, and participation in regional community activities.
- Enjoying meaningful engagement in local community activities and cultural and educational opportunities while striving for a higher level of independence.
- Identifying and using personal and/or technological adaptations to increase social interaction, communication, independence, and/or coping skills in the community.
- Increasing opportunities for inclusion in the community where individuals with disabilities are welcomed.
The Arc aims for an end result of community integration, participation in making choices, taking care of oneself, maintaining good health and wellbeing, and participation in the activities of daily living while ensuring participants are treated with dignity and respect. Within the scope of activity, skill areas are addressed which increase self-sufficiency, interaction with others, and satisfaction in life.

- Sustaining competency in community settings and becoming active members of the community.
- Developing and increasing natural supports. Making and nurturing rewarding friendships.
- Increased personal interaction with non-disabled persons.
- Fostering independence reflecting individual cultural preferences.
- Greater ability to make personal decisions and more effective self-advocacy.
- Expressing emotions in acceptable ways.
- Respecting self and others.
Excel-ling at Life
Fitness and self-care play a significant role in the ability of an individual to participate in life activities. Participants learn to use information from health screenings and any health related activities to support their fitness and well-being. Staff members note pertinent information presented in health screenings or classes that will help care providers or family members to support the participants.
The program is designed to support, train, and assist participants in communicating, building social relationships, and speaking up for themselves. Levels of skills taught are tailored to individual needs and abilities.
