Adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities find themselves at a disadvantage when it comes to opportunities for community inclusion and integration. With this in mind, we designed the Community Integration Program (CIP) as a community-focused alternative to typical day and work programs. CIP offers participants an array of social and community activities of their choosing in the most integrated way possible. This is a very active program that engages participants in community activities daily.
Community activities are offered to meet social, vocational, educational, psychological, and physical needs. These options are available to assist in the creation of personally tailored life experiences, enabling each participant to function as independently as possible for as long as possible. Activity options include hikes, beach days, visits to museums, places of historical interest, farmers markets, piers, and so much more.
The Arc maintains a philosophy of individualized, person-centered programs, aiming for community integration, participation in decision-making, self care, maintaining good health and well-being, and participation in the activities of daily living. The curriculum is a functional one with skill areas determined individually by desire and need. Program staff facilitate in the community and in the classroom setting by offering support, assistance, and training in participants’ desired activities. Within the scope of activity, skill areas are addressed which increase independence, interaction with others, and satisfaction in life. Areas addressed as needed include community integration and safety awareness, communication, education, interpersonal social skills, self-advocacy, leisure, recreation, and self-care. Making friends and developing natural supports is emphasized.
The outcome goals for individuals participating in CIP include the following:
